The history of blood gases, acids and bases

cross-reference between papers. Worse, editorial indulgence has left several of them substantially overlapping in scope, if not mutually contradictory-so that Nutton does much of the job of three other contributors rather more cogently than they can themselves. The weakness of these three emphasizes a more general failure to match painstaking scholarship with thoughtful interpretation. Contented reference to "tradition and empiricism" is not enough: by now we ought to be questioning the sensitivity of that formulation, not merely endorsing it. Danish chemists and physiologists have made many significant contributions to the development of blood gas analysis, which plays such an important role in clinical chemistry. The senior author, Poul Astrup, who writes its history up to 1950, himself developed a delicate electrometric method of determining pCO2 as a result of seeing patients die of respiratory paralysis from CO2 retention during the Copenhagen polio epidemic of 1952-3. Astrup's account, which he describes as "novelistic", moves from a fairly popular description of the history of respiration and pneumatic chemistry from ancient times to Lavoisier, through the development of vacuum pump techniques by Bunsen, Magnus, Meyer, Ludwig, Pfluger, and others, to an excellent technical review of the nineteenth-and early twentieth-century literature on the oxygen and carbon dioxide dissociation curves. He completes his story by tracing the complicated development of the concept of acidosis. Throughout, there is a welcome emphasis upon the relationship between instrumentation and scientific and clinical advances. Finally, in a rather self-indulgent chapter, his American anaesthetist friend, John Severinghaus, reviews major methodological and instrumental developments in the field (including Astrup's) since 1950. The book, which is translated from the Danish version of 1985, is admirably illustrated and contains an abundance of biographical and anecdotal material for enlivening lectures on physiology or biochemistry or their respective histories. Historians of medicine will find the book superficial, but nevertheless a useful source of biographical information on obscurer European physiological chemists. The reviewer agrees with the Danish Medical Journal that it would "be a dream of a gift for a medical student".

Blood gases and metabolite content and ruminal fermentation in response to diets with different fermentability in Holstein dairy cows
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of diets having different fermentability on blood gases, blood metabolites and ruminal fermentation parameters in Holstein dairy cows. Four multiparous Holstein dairy cows (665 ± 25 kg BW, 170 ± 7.0 DIM and 15±1.5 kg of milk yield), fitted with rumen cannulae, were used in a 4×4 Latin Square design with 28-d periods. Corn starch and sucro...
متن کاملEfficacy of Omega 3-6-9 fatty acids, alone or in combination with low dose aspirin, in the improvement of uterine blood flow in women with history of recurrent miscarriage: A prospective, randomized, clinical trial.
Background & Objectives: Recurrent miscarriage (RM) occurs in some women. There is much evidence that increased uterine blood flow resistance (reduced uterine perfusion) increases the risk of RM. This study was aimed at evaluating the efficacy of Omega 3-6-9 fatty acids, alone or in combination with aspirin, in the reduction of uterine blood flow resistance in women with a history of RM. Metho...

Addition of Potassium cyanide to a mixture of Schiff base and lithium perchlorate afforded a-aminonitriles in high yields. Addition of potassium cyanide to a methanolic solution of Schiff base and phosphoric acid afforded a-aminonitriles. When the reaction mixture was refluxed it gave a-amino acids in high yields.

A total of 150 day old female chickens (Ross 308) were randomly allocated to 2 groups with 5 replicate and 15 chicks in each replicate to determine the effects of cold induced ascites on performance, antioxidant status, blood enzyme activities and bone metabolism. The two experimental treatments were: 1) chicks that reared under normal temperature (NT) and 2) chicks that reared under cold tempe...

متن کاملUptake and nitrate accumulation affected by partial replacement of nitrate-N with different source of amino acids in spinach and lettuce
As natural plant growth stimulators, amino acids are widely used to improve the yield and quality of crops. Change in enzymes activities of N assimilation (NR, NiR and GS), residual nitrate (NO3-), soluble protein content, and yield of spinach and lettuce plants were investigated under replacing 20% nitrate-N in the nutrient solution by L-glycine and blood meal amino acids. Seeds of the mention...
